Before indoor Plumbing, people defecated in outhouses. An outhouse was a crude shack built over a hole in the ground, and you would go inside and squat over the hole as you relieved yourself. When the hole became full, you would dig another one and move the outhouse to the new spot and fill in the old one.
If a person was elderly or handicapped, or the weather conditions didn't permit going to the outhouse, then there were chamber pots. That was a pot that you would squat over, and it had a lid. When it got full, someone would have to empty it. That is probably the origin of the rude expression about being too poor to afford a pot to urinate in or a window to throw it out of.
