An xray technician is a health care provider who works with patients requiring xrays. This work is done in doctor and dentist offices, hospitals, imaging and radiology centers and sometimes in nursing homes. The technician explains the procedure to the patient, prepares them for testing with lead shields and aprons, positions the patient for the optimal xray views and operates the equipment that takes the xray image. This job requires a person who can remain calm and professional working with people who may be frightened or in pain. The xray technician job requires being on your feet most of the work day. The working conditions are usually pleasant and 40 hour work weeks are most common. X-ray techs generally work 9-5 however, working in a hospital care may require nights and weekends. Salary ranges from $68,000 to a low of about $32,000 with $48,000 being average. Health benefits are often included in salary packages for this career. There is excellent job security as an xray technician due to the increasing population, the aging of the baby boomers and the need to replace techs who are retiring. Training to be an xray technician is offered at universities, colleges and trade schools. A high school diploma or GED is usually required for admission. Training can last from one to four years depending on the program. Many xray technicians choose a two year associates degree to start. Additional certifications in specialized MRI and CAT scan technologies are available for those wanting to advance their careers. Classes include anatomy and physiology, patient care, radiation protection, imaging, medical terminology, and medical ethics. There is a national board exam, called the ARRT.
