Clothing that was made from natural fibres as the majority of man-made fibres had not been developed yet. The styles of clothing were very much more formal than today. In the towns and cities men wore suits and ties and always wore hats; whilst women wore dresses down to their ankles, sleeves down to their wrists and necklines right up to their necks. Victorian concepts of morality and modesty were very much in evidence. Children wore smaller versions of their parents clothing. Poor people wore less quality fabrics and relied on rough cottons and woollens rather than linen, velvet and silks.

In rural areas people work working clothes during the day that still would consist of a coat, waistcoats and ties for men and dresses for women. In the western USA people worn less formal and more functional clothing than they did in the eastern USA. Denim jeans would make there appearance in the USA as working man's wear.

The trend of suit, tie and hat wearing continued until the 1950s in both the USA and Europe.

Of course native peoples all over the world wore different clothing mostly consisting of animal skins and fabrics made from natural fibres.
