Medicines were first used by the ancient Chinese. In both China and Europe medicines were made with various plants being the main ingredient as indeed are some today. I would think that scientific study of medicine as we know it today first started about 1900.
Mostly what we call "folk medicine", derived from plants. They also had alcoholic spirits, laudanum, and a few other medicines.

Pioneers use to make a fire with wood. Wood was very hard to find on the Oregon Trail, so pioneers mostly used Buffalo Chips (dried buffalo poop.)
The Yanomami people used plants from the rain forest to make the medicine.
No they were beyond that. Romans used spears. Pioneers had guns.
