Lunch was a light meal for the Romans. It was more like a snack and usually leftovers from the previous dinner were eaten.

Roman soldiers were given a dailyration of grain to make their own bread and porridge which were the mainstay of their diet. They also ate meat, eggs and cheese from the animals kept at forts. Their diet also varied depending on where they were stationed because they relied on the local grain and plants and hunted the local game. They also traded with the locals for food. Wine was an important part of the daily ration even when campaigning. When stationed in beer-producing areas they bought beer from the locals. Smoked bacon was popular because it did not go off quickly.
