The vikings, that is the people who went aviking, were rich to begin with. They needed to afford a boat, the trade goods to start them off, the weapons and gear. The people who led viking voyages were usually the 2nd or 3rd sons of kings or other noble born men who had money to spare. The main purpose of the voyage was not gold or wealth, but to make a name for oneself by bringing home the gold and wealth.

The Norsemen did not live in squalor by any sense of the word. They were very clean, virtually no one was impoverished. If a person did loose all his wealth, he could easily sell himself as a thrall to a karl. The thralls (slaves) were very well treated, owned their own possession, etc. They were even paid.

On average and as a people, not richer than most peoples surrounding them. Vikings (also called Normans) lived in harsh conditions in their homelands, the very reason why they risked their lives sailing out and establishing themselves elswhere. Although they became infamous for the raids in which they robbed anything of value not nailed to the floor, we must remember that most of the Horror stories were written by monks whose churches and convents had been robbed empty and who naturally carried a grudge.

Most Vikings however were settlers in lands like Normandy, England, Russia and Sicily and lived there mostly like the people around them. Some did well, especially the traders and the swords-for-hire; most lived the life of farmers, sailors and craftsmen.
