Russia had a major revolution in 1917 that started the communist government and the name of the country became the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) or the Soviet Union. The czar Nicolas II was executed and Vladmir Lenin became the leader.

The main ideology change came to Russia. The leader of the revolt against the provisional government set up after the czar abdicated was Lenin. He was instrumental in trying to start a communist government built upon the writings of Karl Marx. This entailed the effort of the new communist government to own or control all the means of production in Russia.
Vladimir I. Lenin was transported from Switzerland to Russia in order to put him in a position to stir up unrest and opposition to the war or even to create a revolution to change the government that would end Russia's hostilities with Germany in World War I.
Effectively the revolution ends Russias' involvement as a beligerant in WW1. Therefore Russia, indirectly, becomes communist because of WW1, but Communist Russia was not part of it, surrendering a massive amount of territory as a result of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
The US did not change the capital of Russia, Russia is quite a large country and is not heavily influenced by other countries. When Russia did change its capital it was because there was a change in government in their own country not because of the US.

The Bolshevik Party (later called the Communist Party) under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin established a "communist" government in Russia during World War 1. Strictly speaking, they established a socialist government, but they referred to it as a communist government.
