They had very limited rations.

A few cracker like biscuits, if they were lucky some bacon and cheese but they mainly survived on Bully beef, which was basically tinned corned beef.

Intrestingly each man got a daily ration of rum to keep him warm and his morale high They also had a tinned stew called maconachie which contained water mmixed with chloride and dried vegetables. If there were no vegetables some sodiers used leaves as they added flavour.

A very good question which I happened to stumble upon myself when I was looking for the answer! I have found this link which should answer all your questions. It shows the rations of food and drink that soldiers received during World War One. The link is as follows:

http://www.historylearningsite.co.UK/soldiers_food_in_the_trenches.htm

Hopefully this will answer any questions you may have as it did mine.

:-)

however this website shows what the Brits were eating (hence the UK in the name) so if you are looking for American food rations this is not the place to go.

The primary drink the soldiers in WWI had in their rations was tea. Sometimes they were given small amounts of rum to improve their moods.
