When they had free time they would often write letters back home or repair the sandbag.
The feeling of boredom was considerably reduced and replaced by desperation and terror when most everyone aside from your buddies was out to get you either in sorties, sneak attacks in the night, purposeful shelling by the enemy, accidental shelling by your own side, gas drifting in from one direction or another, and rats full of the folks that died the previous day wandering the trenches to see if you were on the menu yet.
Soldiers passed the time very wisely in the trenches when they were not fighting. They would dig trenches to one another and play card games and such. after the war, there were many trenches. it looked likes tons of mazes. During lulls in the fighting they would sleep, exhaustion being a serious problem. If time permitted they would write letters to home or read their own mail. If it was possible (and it wasn't always) they would wash and de-louse each other. Some would be sent to the rear to collect food rations - if any were available. Trenches may need repairing or clearing of debris and of course bodies removed if possible. Weapons needed to be cleaned constantly to prevent guns from jamming. And they played games, sang songs, talked about home and shared a fag (cigarette) or two. All this was dependent on the weather and troops could spend weeks up to their knees in thick oozing mud and up to their wastes in dirty water full of sewage and body parts. But the war didn't stop for long and they were constantly exposed to sniper fire, artillery barrages, gas and sudden attacks. A very collectible type of hand made item from WW1 is called "trench art" and this refers to anything made by soldiers at the front. The usual things were hand made cigarette lighters made from a 303 cartridge, or wood carvings, made from old wooden crates and boxes, or leather carvings from broken horse harness. Anything that was broken or thrown away could be used as a piece of art. Many men wrote poems and songs to sing while they marched to and from the trenches. Many depicted what the hardships of the trenches were and what they went through. A good example is Wilfred Owen's "Anthem for Doomed Youth."
In World War 1 in the trenches the soldiers would entertain themselves by playing cards and writing letters or to a diary. There was not much that you could do as there was alot of shooting and shells going.
At the
At the beginning of the war, whilst the soldiers were living in the trenches they weren't doing anything much at all. Occasionally they smoked this affected a lot of the soldiers health, this is why some of the soldiers weren't strong enough. If any of the soldiers were lucky, they might have some playing cards. So they sometimes played Poker or blackjack. However most of the time, they would wait in there and when a soldier was knocked down a soldier would leave their trench and they would fight.
Play cards, write letters home and pray they would survive
They went on MXit to prevent them from going crazy.
In trenches I really doubt there was any downtime to be bored in. But I'd imagine they wrote letters home, or played cards. but sometimes they reverted to sexual fun;)
During WW1, the activities that soldiers did in their spare were to play cards, write in diaries, write letters home, or take some to sleep. Trenches were very unpleasant places for soldiers because the environment was often muddy and often had the stench of rotting corpses.
No. Trenches were used in wars as far back as history is recorded. Trenches were used in the Revolutionary war in the US. Some of these trenches can still be seen at the scene of some battlefields such as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and Yorktown Virginia.

Romans soldiers had limited spare time. They were kept busy with drills and training and with construction. They built and maintained their own facilities and built the military roads. In their spare times they played board games and dice and went hunting.

Segfried Sassoon was a major inflence on the poetry world as he spoke how he felt and how he viewed the world, especially WWI. He provided an eyewitness view on life in the trenches and showed a darker side to life in the war; that at the time people had not seen. He touched on subjects that even today people would feel uncomfortable talking about; such as suicide in the trenches and he gave his view on the world through the eyes of a soldier.

I assume you mean primarily World War One. Trench warfare developed over time, because at some point, neither side was 'winning' or 'losing'. A stalemate developed, and each side literally 'dug in' to hold the ground they had occupied. The trenches also protected a soldier against the massive amount of machine gun fire, and artillery fire. The trenches became ever larger and more elaborate. Living conditions for the average soldier were terrible. World War Two saw fewer examples of trench warfare, because of greater mobility, and better communication.
A private is the lowest rank you canpossibly get in the war. If you were a private you would live in the unsanitary trenches and spend most of your time fighting at the front lines. Privates would have to obey everyone higher than them and most of them died, which is very sad!
