The 1960s didn't start out with colourful clothes. They were dull and looked better on older people. Then shops (botuquies) began selling cheap and colourful clothing for younger people. During the decade, women started wearing mini skirts, leather boots and fake eyelashes. Men wore Paisley shirts, velvet trousers and high collared Regency jackets. Men also began to wear their hair long in the later period.

The concept of teenagers dates from the 1950s. Even the idea of adolescence dates from the 1890s at the earliest and was 'created' by psychologists. In the 1800s the great majority of people in their teens had to work for their living once they had finished school at age 13 or 14. There was no 'teenage culture' till the 1950s/1960s.
