Good because they loved olive trees and that's the reason they named the city after her
Athena named the city Athens after herself;at her birth King Kekrops the founder of the city, first offered sacrifices to her. She planted the olive and named his city after herself after it had been judged by the gods to be hers.
Her symbol is the owl,for wisdom, and the olive tree because that is the gift she gave to Athens.
I believe Athena was important to the Athenians because she was the founder of Athens, her city in Greece (Now the capital). She was competing with Poseidon, the Greek God of The Sea and Earthquakes, on who should rule the city. So, they were each presented a gift for the city. Poseidon's Gift was a water spring, and Athena's gift was the Olive Tree. The people agreed that Athena's Olive Tree was better and helped the town more, so they names it after her. They worship her. That is also what created the rivalry between Athena and Poseidon.
Yes. as a gift to the Athenians to try to become the patron Goddess of Athens.
They both wanted to be patron god of the city of Athens, and Athena won. They made a deal that they would each give one gift to the city of Athens.First was Poseidon. He gave the town a fountain. The Athenians were really happy with the water at first. Then they tasted it.It was salt water,so they couldn't drink it.Next was Athena. She gave the town of Athens a little olive tree. The Athenians were very satisfied.Olives had many great uses for things like medicine, cooking oil,and chocolate. The Athenians chose Athena and they named the city after her.Athens.Poseidon's a grudge holder,so they started arguing again.=(

No states have a city named Gift.

Athens was named after Athena, the patron goddess of the city. She and Poseidon fought over who would be patron, and in the end, they had a competition. They both had to create a gift to give to the Athenians, and whoever had the better gift won. Poseidon made a salt water spring (being the god of the seas) and Athena created the olive tree. Needless to say, she won.
Athena gave the Athenians an Olive tree. Poseidon gave them a salt water spring. olives were more valuable and so the Athenians chose Athena as their patron god. To the person above, Poseidon did not give them a saltwater spring, he gave them the first horse Actually, to the person above Poseidon gave the people a fountain not a horse... The person above you is right.
Basically, Athene and Poseidon both wanted the city, and so the elders of the town decided to hold a contest. Whichever god could give Athens the better gift would have the honour of it being named after them. Poseidon gave a spring of salt water, or a horse in some versions; Athene gave the olive tree. Athene's gift was judged the better, and the city was named after her. It is said that the spring is still there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athena#Lady_of_Athens

Athena competed with Poseidon to be the patron deity of Athens. They agreed that each would give the Athenians one gift and the Athenians would choose whichever gift they preferred. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident and a spring sprang up, but the water was salty and not very useful, whereas Athena offered them the first domesticated olive tree. Thus, Athena became the patron goddess of Athens.
