Did the the Chinese workers of the transcontinental railroad get paid?

In the 1865 there was a labor shortage. The Central Pacific had enough jobs for 4,000 men. Yet, they managed only to get only 800 workers at any time. Most of the early workers were Irish immigrants and in keeping with the prejudices of the time the management thought the Irish workers spent their pay on liquor. They even paid some in liquor. Soon the idea came about to employ Chinese labor and by 1868 there were 120,000 Chinese working on the railroad in groups of 20 with a white foreman. The pay at first was 27.00 a month and then was increased to 30.00 a month as the work got harder. The cost of food and board was deducted from that pay. The Irish who were still working were paid 35.00 a month and food/board was provided. Workers lived in tents along side the grade and in the mountains wooden bunkhouses protected workers from the snow. Each gang had a cook. The Irish workers ate mainly meat and potatoes, but the Chinese workers had vegetables and seafood. They also kept pigs and chickens for weekend meals.

What do railroad workers actually do?

Railroad track workers build, inspect, maintain, and repair more than three hundred thousand miles of railroad track across the country. Working in crews called road gangs, they inspect the rails, railroad ties, and roadbeds for signs of wear. Other crew members then rebuild washed-out roadbeds, replace railroad ties, and lay new sections of rail. They use power equipment, such as spikedriving machines and bulldozers, as well as picks and shovels. Regular crews maintain the tracks, also called the right-of-way, throughout the year. Extra crews are needed to repair large sections of track at certain times of the year, especially in the northern part of the country. The railroads in the Chicago area employ the greatest number of railroad track workers. In addition to track workers, there are many other positions - electricians, signal maintainers, communications technicians, bridge workers, locomotive mechanics, train dispatchers, computer programmers, car cleaners, plumbers, civil engineers, electrical engineers, architects, and at least a dozen more fields. Describing the work of all the dedicated railroad workers on any major railroad can fill a small book.
