The Chipewyan were distributed in many small bands between Hudson Bay and the Great Slave Lake. Their name is related to their clothing: it is from a Cree word meaning "people of pointed skins", because the men wore shirts of caribou skins that came to a point at the lower edge, front and back.

Caribou and deer provided most of the hides used for clothing. A man's outfit took around 10 hides for the shirt, trousers, moccasins, breechclout, robe, cap and mittens. Men of the far northern groups like the Chipewyan wore trousers instead of leggings, tied with a drawstring around the waist. The shirt was very distinctive and often painted, fringed and beaded.

Women wore the same kind of shirt as the men, but not pointed and much longer - often reaching the ankles. The shirt was loose enough for a baby to be carried inside, on the mother's back. Short leggings were worn, often attached to the moccasins before about 1850. Boots of caribou skin with moose-hide soles were stuffed with hair and provided warm protection for feet and legs.

Parkas and robes of caribou hide were worn by men and women. Children might wear entire outfits of rabbit fur strips sewn together.
