This depends on which group of Christians. The pope and all his buddies started to crusades to retake the land conquered by the Muslims. They used religion as a tool. They told the world that any christian that joined the crusades would go to heaven, no matter what crimes they have committed. This worked well, as the murderers, thieves and scoundrels were removed from Britain, France, Italy, etc.. and used to fight for the church.
