Most folks incorrectly assume that the Confederate States were organized around a shared belief in the practice of slavery and that they subsequently seceded from the Union because member states refused to abandon the practice of slavery. This easy-to-swallow version of the situation is what has been taught in most schools ever since the Restoration, as it is always the victor who writes the history books.

Let me state this unequivocally: I DO NOT ENDORSE THE PRACTICE OF SLAVERY! I CONSIDER IT INEXCUSABLE!

Although I believe that slavery was the "hot-topic issue" of the day, I think that this is an oversimplification of the larger issue at the heart of the matter: the right of States to govern themselves as opposed to having their rights & laws dictated to them by a larger, federal government.
