They used copper chisels and hammers. The problem with them is that they wore down very fast, so they had a system of production to make them and always have a sharp one. It took a long time to cut a large block of stone. Sometimes they could use cracks all ready in the stone or create cracks through heat by heating the stone block.

The Romans simply took the existing technology and applied it to aqueducts, bridges and other constructions.

The earlier pyramids were built from stone usually limestone and granite. Later pyramids were built from mud bricks cased in polished limestone.
