Why did us government want to move native Americans to reservations?

The Europeans didn't want to kill them all. The Spainish especially built missions to teach Native Americans Catholism, so the reservation would appeal to those friars. The Europeans were also taking control of their land and forced the Native Americans out naturally. Then they made a separate part of their land for them of course.

Why is it ironic that the federal government made it illegal for Native Americans to practice their own religion?

This question requires more information. Clearly Native Americans of today have no such religious problems. The question may ironically refer to perhaps the Pilgrims who left England and found little comfort in the Netherlands. With that they obtained a charter from the British Crown to settle in North America. There of course they had complete freedom from the Church of England. The US Constitution makes it clear that no laws adversely effecting religion are allowed. As white settlers moved west, many of them believed they had the duty to teach the Native Tribes Protestant Christianity. Spanish colonists sought to convert Native Americans to Catholicism.

Could native Americans follow their own beliefs?

Yes and no. When the Spanish arrived in the new world they brought with them Catholic priests to convert the natives and they forced them to convert. The missions also forced them to give up tribal practices. When the Native Americans were forced onto the reservation system they were often forced to not practice tribal ways. Children were removed from families and placed in government schools. Once there they were not allowed to speak their native language, dress in native dress, nor practice tribal ways. Boys were forced to have their hair cut and when a boy's hair was cut it meant that a parent had died. Many Native Americans hid their traditions and would practice them when they were alone. Many cultures have done this to preserve their culture and to teach the young.

What is the main idea of My Heart Soars by Chief Dan George?

To love every thing? I believe he was attempting to teach (the greatest aspiration of any Native American) people about how a Native American see's the world around him (her) and the difference in how you see it. To attempt to translate it: Most American, or Christian, based cultures believe the earth and everything on it is here to serve them while Native Americans believe we are part of the earth, inseparable from it, and we have to understand our places in that world.
