Mythology was a collection of stories explaining the world and its happenings, religion is the beliefs of these things and gods.
Yes, but not only Greeks. The religion Hellenismos (the Greek religion) is actually practiced around the world, but by few people. I personally know people in America that are Hellenic.
Answer In this scientific world gods and goddess have become a joke. These man made stories of gods and goddess are no long fit into the world which is rapidly advancing in all sphere technically and scientifically. Even the ordinary people are not in a position to still believe that sun, moon etc are gods. The man made stories dated thousands of years are irrelevant to the present world.
The Greek gods were a way for the ancient Greeks to explain what was happening in the world. for example the Greeks thought that the sea god Poseidon (Roman: Neptune) was the god of water. when there was earthquakes, the Greeks thought that Poseidon was crashing the water into the land and so they called him "earth shaker"
The conquest of Alexander the Great lead to a Hellenization (which means basically making the world Greek-like) throughout his empire. This included spreading the pagan religion of the Greeks and establishing schools and government buildings that were focused on the teachings of Greek philosophers. Neither the Greeks nor Romans forced religious conversion and, for the most part, let people follow whichever religion they were accustomed to. When religion started to cause unrest or rebellions is when they would step in and assert their authority.
The Greeks had myths and legends to explain everything. How each city was founded. How people learned to write. Why the sea is salty. How the world began. Why there is both good and evil in the world. Everything that now we explain with religion, the Greeks explained with fable and myth. And then, as now, most uneducated people believed that the stories were literally true; while a majority of educated people believed that the stories were not exactly true, but contained spiritual truths which needed to be observed.
that there are good stories to tell. it also explained (what the Greeks and Romans believed) what happened in the world (like the weather, animals, trees, anything!). There are many other reasons to what mythology explained too so you might want to research elsewhere.
Greek myths explained things that the Greeks could not explain scientifically. They explained how the seasons and the earth worked. They explained how the world began, who was in control, and why there was good and bad luck.
Yes and No. Maybe. Mythological stories are stories from long ago that explained the world to the people back then. An interesting thing about many of them (e.g.Greek, Roman, Native American) is that they share stories of the flood, the people are similar with different names and the phrasing can be similar. Mythology is an interesting field of study. Answer Most mythologies are not true. But if you want to get technical, religion is mythology so just ask yourself this, is religion true?
The Greeks ushered in the belief that the physical world can be explained in terms of nature and not the result of the supernatural. Their thinking was based on logical thinking and mathematics.
It was how the Ancient Greeks explained the world around them. Much like the Egyptian mythology. It is about all the gods and goddesses and what they were the 'rulers' of.
Mythology was a collection of stories explaining the world and its happenings, religion is the beliefs of these things and gods.
Both Old Norse religion and ancient Egyptian religion involved a pantheon of gods and goddesses with specific attributes and powers. Both religions also placed importance on rituals and ceremonies to honor their deities. Additionally, both belief systems had myths and stories that explained the creation of the world and various natural phenomena.
That's like asking you why you need Jesus, or Allah, or whatever your religion is. Their myths were their science. That was how they explained the world. The seasons were caused by Demeter missing her Daughter, Persephone when she went to the Underworld. Storms were caused by Zeus being in a foul mood. etc.
The way the Greeks and Romans explained the world they lived in. They needed something to believe. Come on, earthquakes don't just go of by themselves. . .
In Ancient Greece, their Mythology wasn't myth, in their time, it was as much a religion as Christianity, Judaism, and Islamic faiths are today. Technically, the Greeks Gods are as real as Jesus, that is to say, non-existant. They very well could have been real people, but, even so, the stories of their lives were blown way out of proportions. Today, according to the History Channel, scientists have begun to wonder if the so called "gods" were maybe extra terrestrial beings from another world, who seemed to be gods to the naive people of Ancient Greece.
Ancient Greeks didn't have lots of science and technology, so they depended on myths too explain how the earth and many natural causes were first formed. These stories used Gods and Goddesses to explain how things were created, almost how like in the bible, the first "story" is how God separated sky and earth, and created water, etc. Hope that this helped!
