Nanaimo began as a trading post in the early 1800s; in 1849 the Snuneymuxw chief Ki-et-sa-kun ("Coal Tyee") informed the Hudson's Bay Company of the presence of coal in the area, and in 1853 the company built a fort known as the Nanaimo Bastion (still preserved). Subsequently the town was chiefly known for the export of coal.
Incorporated by royal charter in 1670, the Hudson's Bay Company was set up to capitalize on (read that as "monopolize") the North American fur trade. In exchange for qulaity pelts, the trappers would receive their choice of iron mongery, ceramic, alcohol, blankets and so on.

The Hudson's Bay Company was founded in Eastern Canada (1670). For a little over a century it was a fur market in the area. ================================================================================= 1. The Hudson's Bay Company still exists. It is still doing business. In fact, I have a Hudson's Bay Company Mastercard. Until recently, I had a Hudson's Bay Company credit card as well. 2. The Hudson's Bay Company was not "founded" in "Eastern Canada." It was Chartered in England. 3. King Charles II incorporated, by Royal Charter, on May 2, 1670, "The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson's Bay." The name was eventually shortened to "Hudson's Bay Company." 4. The Hudson's Bay Company was a trading company that established trading posts on the shores of Hudson Bay, and later in Canada's interior. At those trading posts, it traded European manufactured goods to the people of the First Nations. From them in return, the Hudson's Bay Company received animal furs, which were then shipped back to England.
they helped them by trading furs and riches. But, the Henry Hudson's crew deceived them and stole everything they could from the natives before traveling south. Henry did not care all he cared about was to find a northeast passage to Asia.
The main fur-trading companies in Canada were the Hudson Bay Company, and the North-West Company. They were both in tight competition.
