they handed him to the Romans as per the Romans request. the Jews were ruled by the Romans and we're tortured and killed at their tormentors whim. all who opposed rome would die immediately so when they asked the Jews for one of their own (keep in mind Jesus was considered a Jewish "outlaw" and so handing over a criminal would have been seen as a need to keep their families alive.
