The Maidu Indians of Northern California were hunters, fishers and gatherers. Their main job was survival. They lived mostly on the acorn nut of the Black Oak Tree which they ground up with stone mortar and pestles then leached, to creat an acorn mush to eat. They often added other vegetables.
Ironically enough, I believe the world's largest acorn comes from the Coast Live Oak. This is because the tree in our front yard just shedded a walloping acorn that's a little bit bigger than a nectarine.
