Maya
Well the Mayans weren't an empire, one uses the name of Maya to refer to all of the mesoamerican city-states that were in center America and had common cultural aspects. The Aztecs appeared in history at about 1100 A.D and some Mayan cities are from as far as 200 A.D so obviously the Mayans came first.

Both the Mayans and Aztecs where polytheistic.
The Aztec temples were built by the Aztec people under the direction of their rulers and religious leaders. The most famous temple, Templo Mayor, in their capital city of Tenochtitlan, was constructed in stages and dedicated to various deities. The temples were significant religious and ceremonial structures in Aztec society.

Neither of those lived in the southeast US. The Mayan civilization was in southern Mexico and Latin America; the Aztecs were in central Mexico.
