The Mayans and their civilization was no longer around by the time Europeans showed-up by at least 600 years.

yes they were , my teacher is teaching us about it and he said they thought they dressed funny and did't get what they were speaking

Well sorry. Perhaps your teacher confused them with the Aztecs. This is very common occurrence even when my children attended high school.
