Hiawatha was a co-founder of the Iroquois Confederacy, whose members call themselves the Haudenosaunee. He was a leader of the Onondaga tribe or the Mohawk tribe, or both. Consequently he would have spoken either the Onondaga language (Onǫda'gegá') or the Mohawk language (Kanyen'kéha'). Both languages are closely related members of the Northern Iroquoian Language group.
