The color purple - the name was given to them by the Greeks after the purple dye made from shellfish which they exported.

From the Greek word for a shellfish which produced blue dye, for which the city of Tyre was famous.

the name phoenician means, "bloodred people". im not so sure what bloodred people means, but at least i was able to answer your first question. maybe it means that they shed a ton of blood. as in war.
