The first Thanksgiving in 1621 was not called that by the Pilgrims. They did not feel it was an event to be thankful for and called it a "Harvest Festival" in celebration of the colony's first successful harvest. For them it was strictly religious giving thanks to the Lord.

It isn't known for sure where the first Thanksgiving was held. But the most commonly selected location of that first thankful celebration tends to be the site of the modern day Plimouth Plantation. Few records have survived from those times. Basically, what's known today are the facts that the celebration lasted three days, and that venison and fowl were included on the menu.

Are there any movies made that tell the story of Thanksgiving?

Mouse on the Mayflower - I chose this movie as one of the best animated Thanksgiving movies as it does a wonderful job of telling the story of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. It is told from the viewpoint of a church mouse by the name of William. Though the animation is a bit dated, it is still a wonderful way to introduce children to the harsh realities faced by the Pilgrims and the meaning of the first Thanksgiving.

What is the history of Thanksgiving in United States? The initial "Thanksgiving" feast, held in 1621, was really a traditional English harvest celebration. The Pilgrims shared it with the Native Americans because they had taught the colonists to plants crops and hunt wild game. Since the Pilgrims didn't use forks or plates, they ate their meal straight off the table with spoons, knives or their fingers.
