The Romans associated the Greek god Ares with their Mars.
He was called by the Greeks "Ares" well before the Romans called their Mars the same as Ares.
The Romans did.
Ares was considered by the Romans similar to their Mars.
The Greeks and Romans differ in their view of Ares in that the Greeks viewed him solely as a violent God. He is known as the God of war but had many other attributes in Roman lore.
Ares was worshiped by warriors, as well as those to prevent or cause fear and dread or courage.
Mars. Ares was the Greek god of war, the Romans equivalent god was known as Mars.

The Romans identified the Greek god Ares with their Mars.
The Romans identified him with Mars. The Greek epithets are in the link below.
Ares is the God of War for the Greeks where Mars is the same except for the Romans. The difference here is that Mars was more revered by the Romans, and Ares was more hated. Ares was the God of War, Murder, and Bloodshed. Mars was the God of War, Agriculture, and (I think) food. What I am trying to get at was that Mars is seen as a God of Life, while Ares is seen as a god of death. The Roman soldiers prayed to Mars to support them in battle and what not. Hope this helps!
Mars, through a Roman god was identified by the Romans with Ares.
