The Romans were great engineers, the developed the arch and invented the keystone, created a waterproof strong concrete out of volcanic rock, and invented cranes and waterwheels to help them raise materials.

The Roman engineers were great at the practical applications. Some of their achievements were the construction of the straight roads, the hypocaust system of heating water to various temperatures, the engineering of the water gates to flood and drain the Colosseum, the invention of the dome using different weights of concretes for different purposes, the above ground aqueducts, and the various siege machinery that was used by the military.
