Step 1- be sure that the maker of our revolver WAS Smith & Wesson. If the only marking is "38 S&W", that is not the maker, but the caliber. Second, if the gun IS marked Smith & Wesson, contact S&W customer service. S&W does not share data on dates of manufacture as other makers do.
The Model 40 "Centennial" was manufactured from 1952 - 1974. It had a grip safety that could be pinned down. It was named the Centennial because it was introduced the same year that Smith & Wesson was celebrating it's 100th birthday. It was initially marketed as a more advanced version of the famous S&W Hammerless "Lemon Squeezer". Due to popular demand the Centennial was brought back into production in the 1990's without the grip safety. The Airweight version was the Model 42.

The S&W 32 safety hammerless (aka safety new departure or lemon squeezer) was made from 1888-1902 for the first model, second model was from 1902-1909,and the third model from 1909-1937.The value of all these models will depend on the amount of original finish remaining on the handgun in question. You will need to add this info to your question along with the type of grips(wood ,pearl, ivory etc.)and the amount of nickel plating remaining to get a more accurate value to your Smith and Wesson handgun.
The purpose of a lemon squeezer is to squeeze out the lemon to make lemon juice. It makes it much easier and faster to make lemon juice for everyone to enjoy.
