To test if they were worthy, a spartan would dip the baby in freezing water, and if they came out blue and/or shivering, they would leave them in a pit to starve, die of thirst, or be eaten by animals.

They examined them. If they had any imperfections at all, they were left on a mountain to fend for themselves. Obviously, they never survived.
