The Tlingit traded mainly hooligan grease for a variety of goods. They traded as far west as the Aleutians, as far north as Ft. Selkirk, Yukon Territory, as far south as northern California and as far east as central Montana and Alberta. The so-called 14 Tlingit communities monopolized the trade routes, called grease trails, after the hooligan grease that was carried along them. The grease was carried, generally by slaves, in bentwood boxes.
By the way, Hooligan grease is the fat from an eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) which is a smelt like fish often called a candlefish that during spawning has as much as 15% of its body weight in fat.
