An interesting tale, if you'll give me the time. You see on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Major General Richard H Anderson and his division were cut off from Major General John B Hood. There was no way to get the neccesarry supplies that were needed to penetrate cemetary ridge. The General thought there was no hope as the canon fire rained down on his brigades. Then suddenly a lone grouse floated down from the sky. Looking at the grouse, Anderson had an idea. He ordered all the men to empty there rations on to the ground (mostly corn bread.) Then as if by some magic, hundreds of grouse, flocked down to feed on the corn bread. The sacrifice of the rations were to pale in comparison to the plan Anderson had. As the grouse pecked and shuffled there way along, Anderson lined up his men. "Saddle them, let them march unto the valley with our packs. Let them show their glory and may they carry this burden home!" He ordered all the men to catch the grouse with makeshift nets made from tent materials. When the last grouse was caught, the supplies were loaded onto the grouse, one pack each. Then, with a call of "forward!" The grouse were freed and together marched over the hill to Major General Hoods camp. The enemy attempted to cut down the grouse but once they'de passed the ridge, they were unstoppable. So the cemetary ridge was destroyed and men celebrated, the grouse flying home. The next day Andersons men were forced into retreat and he was critisiced for having very little control over his brigades. For the men of the Anderson's division though it was a day of miracles. That is how the grouse came to be state bird. Or at least, thats how the legend goes ;)
