Circumcision goes back a long way. the earliest documentation for it was noted in Egyptian hieroglyphs where it was done to adults of the upper classes. it is theorised that this was done to signify their position in society. The Jews took it up for the same reason and built it into heir religion by claiming that there was an instruction from god to do this. It was done to infants as infants cant back out of having this done to them. The circumcision committed on them however was far less severe then the amount of mutilation that is undergone by them now. It was found that many young Jews were stretching the remains of their foreskin in order to look the same as the non circumcised society's that surrounded them. there are other primitive tribes where this is done around the time of puberty where it signifys advance into manhood. In all cases the concept of a blood sacrifice to society or to a Deity seems to be involved.
