1) Gladiatorial games were not held at theatres. They were held in amphitheatres, which are different things. The theatres were semi-circular and hosted dramas and comedies. The amphitheatres were oval or round and the seating was all around the structure. They were arenas which were built for the gladiatorial games. The most famous one is the Colosseum. 2) As slaves, the gladiators were free to the gladiator trainers who run the gladiatorial schools where the gladiators lived and trained. However, the trainers had to finance the keeping of the gladiators (for example they at the very least needed to have food, to be sheltered, and to have beds, water and washing facilities) the cost of the equipment they used, the cost of the trainers who worked there and the general cost of the of running the schools. They also wanted to make a profit from their business. Therefore, they charged for the performances of the gladiators. 3) The emperors did not just pay for the gladiators. They financed the whole of the gladiatorial games which lasted the whole day and could last for several days and included many other events besides the gladiatorial contests (see below). 4) The emperors financed the gladiatorial games because they were hugely popular. Thus doing this could make them popular and look like benefactors. The gladiatorial games started at 8 am and ended at dusk. .
