∙ 13y agoIt depends on what kind of farmer you're talking about. Some small scale farmers will either kill or cull their hens that aren't laying as much. However, this can have a huge impact on the flock's dynamics, and create a lot of stress for the other chickens. A lot of small scale farmers will keep their older hens, even if they hardly lay. Older hens, even if they don't lay, can have other roles, such as brooding eggs and hatching chicks, keeping order in the flock, especially with younger chickens, and helping with pest control.
Large scale egg producers kill or sell off hens when they are about 16 months old, and their egg production has slowed down.
