Santa Anna was NOT defeated at the battle of Buena Vista. Though 3,400 of Santa Anna's men were dead or wounded versus Taylor's 650, the Mexican general declared victory and retreated.

The men wanted to hang Santa Anna once they had captured him after he had fled and left his men in the Battle of the Alamo.
