Most of the hieroglyphic symbols were pictures of people, gods, animals and everyday objects. There were three things that a glyph could represent in the writing:

  1. a specific consonant or set of consonants. For example, a picture of a desert hare represented the two consonants wn. Such a glyph is called a phonogram.
  2. a specific word or idea. For example, a picture of a banner on a pole represented the word "god", nTr. Such a glyph is an ideogram or logogram.
  3. a general category of meaning. For example, many words involving eating and speaking included a picture of a man with his hand raised to his mouth. These unpronounced glyphs are known as determinatives.

Some glyphs fell into two or even all three of these categories in different words.
