Most Virginian colonists were tobacco farmers. In colonial times, schools were not available for most children of lower or middle classes. So most children were helping on their parents' farms. If they were of an upper class, they might have a private tutor helping them learn.

they did for fun was bobbing for apples. They filled a big tub with water and put apples in it. The apples floated. Then you had to put your face down in there and try to get an apple. It's fun but you might get really wet!
