The Lakota Indians would mainly eat meat that they would hunt and kill themselves such as deer, elk, buffalo, and even squirrels. They would eat fruit and berries as well as grow their own crop.
Food was over 90% meat from deer, antelope and bison (buffalo) prepared in many different ways - including dried for winter storage.
The Lakota term wasna ("anything, ground up") is today often called pemmican; it comprised dried meat, berries and fat or bone marrow, ground up with a pounding stone. This combination is considered very healthy by analysts today.
Other foods were gathered from the wild since no farming was done until the reservation era: berries such as chokecherries, service berries, buffalo berries, strawberries, raspberries, roots such as wild carrot, wild plums, wild turnip, wild potatoes, psin (wild onions) and so on.
A favourite meal was soup called wohanpi, made with buffalo meat, wild turnips and blo (tiny wild potatoes).
The Hidatsa people ate corn, beans, and squash. They also hunted bison.

Hidatsa women wore long deerskin dresses. The men wore heavy buffalo robes and skins.
The Hidatsa attacked her tribe and captured Sacagawea.
Sacagawea was kidnapped by a tribe called The Hidasta tribe when she was 10 to 12 years old.
No tribe travel with them. they did however have an shoshoni woman traveling with them, whom they met while visiting with the hidatsa tribe.
There is no place in North Dakota named Metaherta.The Hidatsa tribe is located on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota, part of the Three Affiliated Tribes or MHA Nation.

Sacajawea (or Sacagawea) was born c. 1788. in an Agaidiku tribe of the Lemhi Shoshone in Idaho. In 1800, when she was about twelve, she and several other girls were kidnapped by a group of Hidatsa warriors during a battle. At this time the Hidatsa lived near the Mandan River in North Dakota.
