Depends on WHICH group of Native Americans you are speaking of. It could be a Hogan (underground house- great for hot weather and tornadoes) or a Pueblo. In the plains, the Tipi used animal skins to cover a portable house- handy for when you moved a lot. Eastern US- it might be a Longhouse, or a Seminole Chickee in Florida. Each was suited to the climate where it was located.

The American Indian built his home/shelter wherever there was material to do so. Sometimes this would be wood, reeds, clay, sod or even shallow caves.

There were more than 20 different types of shelters. Some houses were permanent and others were meant to be moved with the tribe's search for food. The major types are listed here:

  • Longhouse (birch/alder) or plankhouse (cedar)
  • Pit - sod houses
  • Tepee/Tipi/Teepee - portable housing
  • Wickiup - dome made of branches and hide covering
  • Wigwam or tatch dome
  • Masonry structures - adobe - pueblos
  • Log homes usually wattle and daub.
  • Igloo (snow)
