Depends on WHICH group of Native Americans you are speaking of. It could be a Hogan (underground house- great for hot weather and tornadoes) or a Pueblo. In the plains, the Tipi used animal skins to cover a portable house- handy for when you moved a lot. Eastern US- it might be a Longhouse, or a Seminole Chickee in Florida. Each was suited to the climate where it was located.
The American Indian built his home/shelter wherever there was material to do so. Sometimes this would be wood, reeds, clay, sod or even shallow caves.
