These men were all killed by the natives before Columbus returned on his second voyage. Columbus took about 20 natives as slaves, only 7 of which survived the crossing to spain.

Christopher Columbus believed he was Christ's bearer to the new world. When he set out he was trying to find a new root from Europe to Asia. However, when he found the new world he believe it was God's will that he spread the word of Jesus Christ to the natives.

One thing he thought was that he had reached Asia or the east. This is the reason the natives were called Indians.
Columbus writes in his journal that he thought they would make great slaves so this shows an attitude on his part. He also cut off hands of natives when they failed to bring him the amount of gold he wanted. If I had been in their place I would have done the same thing they could see that Columbus wasn't a friend.

He brought across foreign diseases which killed off the native Americans. These diseases spread across the country via the natives, quicker than Columbus and his men were travelling. Therefore they even came across settlements where all the natives were already dead.
