Coral Sea signaled the end battleship fleet actions; carriers would now be the king of the seas (or queen of the seas). Carriers (aircraft carriers=airplanes=air power) had already proved their destructive power over the battleship by sinking the Royal Navy's battleship HMS Prince of Wales on 10 December 1941.

Coral Sea proved that naval decisive "fleet" actions would be decided by aircraft carriers.

Midway was simply putting the lessons learned from Coral Sea to use. (How to fight with aircraft carriers against other aircraft carriers).

US Marine Corps battles for islands were actually naval battles; as US Marines are "naval infantrymen." Some of the US Naval battles were: 1. Sea Battles around the islands of Guadalcanal; these naval fights were the most vicious naval engagements in naval history; especially the "Battle of Friday the 13th." 2. The Battle of the Java Sea; a cruiser fleet action. 3. The Battle of the Coral Sea. 4. The Battle of Midway. 5. The Battle of Leyte Gulf.

With these two victories over Japan, the American Navy forces began to turn the tide in the war against Japan.

How does the Battle of Midway affect us today?

Had not Japan lost the "cream of the crop" of their naval airmen at Midway in 1942; Japan might have won battles, that they historically lost after Midway. And/or men that are today's "grandfathers" may not have survived some of the post-Midway battles. Meaning, certain people of today, would not have been born.

What is significant about the Battle of Midway?

Irreplaceable loss of IJN airmen/flight deck crews which affected future naval battles.
