the south wanted slavery to still exist even if the union was split
They hated it. Lincoln said himself that he did not want to fight against his own brothers. He also said that the Union should help the Rebels and treat them nicely. Smartest 8th grader in the world
The true issue between the North and the South was that the South wanted to use their states rights as the constitution stated they should be. The government wanted the South to obey the laws that they set forth. The beginning of the Civil War had little to do with the slavery issue. It was the same principle that made us want to be independent of England: We (the south) did not want a government that was very far away dictating to us how we should govern our people and live our lives.
why did the south wan to separate from the north
Many respected Virginians (including Lee) who disapproved of secession, but felt their first duty was to their state, not the USA.

because he wanted to unify the industrial north and the agricultural south more than they were, so it would discourage further secession of southern states. by trying to link their economies by the railroad, it would be harder for the south to secede since it would be dependent on the north's market, and in turn the north would be dependent to get its raw materials from the south.
the north didnt want slavery but the south want slavery
why did the south wan to separate from the north
During the pre-Civil War era, the South was beginning to think that they didn't have much of a voice in the government and the government didn't care as much about what they wanted. The main factor of their secession was the issue of slavery, which the South supported and wanted and the North didn't. Eventually, these issues pushed some southern states to secede, the first being South Carolina. More states followed, and they formed the Confederacy, or the Confederate States of America.
US Civil War=North wanted to retain the South Vietnam War=North wanted to conquer the South
The South did not want to get rid of slavery and the North did, The North was trying to force the South into it and they rebelled.

The north was known as the Union. It was the north that did not want the states to be separated.
The primary issue was slavery. The North did not want it, those who were in charge in the South depended on it for their economy. Ever since the beginnings of the US the two sides had disputed on this issue but had always come to compromises that allowed the South to continue this inhuman practice. Finally, the election of Abraham Lincoln was seen by the South as sign that the North was going to end slavery, so they rebelled and left the United States, forming the Confederate States of American. The North went to war to stop them from breaking up the United States. Many people will say that it was actually about state's rights versus the power of a central government, but history shows that the only state's rights issue the South was interested in enough to go to war was Slavery.
