The development of tanks in World War 1 began as a solution to break the stalemate which trench warfare had come around on the western front. - wikipedia
-----------------------------------------------
Tanks were an infantry assault support weapon that served a number of functions. They provided infantry with a small measure of protection against forward machine gun positions but more importantly they cleared a path through the most complex barbed wire defenses, opening the way for the infantry advance. The tank was the mobile equivalent of a machine gun or artillery bunker, to be used against enemy strong points out of the range of the attacking infantry. They were slow moving as they didn't really need to be faster than a man could run. The idea was that tanks would break through the heavily prepared front lines and more mobile and reliable cavalry would follow up the breakthrough into open country behind the trenches.
the main things tanks did was to push through the enemnys front lines, but this was uasually unsuccessful due to poor fire power and voneroblitity to enemy shells.

There were no amphibious tanks used in WW1. Tanks were only used in the late World War, and they were not technically advanced enough to be amphibious. For "the late" substitute "the latter part of", and add "1" after "War".

Some of the long - term effects of the World War 1 tanks were that the future models had to be upgraded to reduce the weaknesses of the earlier tanks. These days, tanks can move faster and have thicker armor.
France produced more tanks during World War I than all other nations combined.
