Tradition has ascribed the number of three to the wise men who visited the young Christ child. This is based on the number of gifts mentioned in St. Matthew of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Traditions have also attempted to explain the nationalities of these men, even referring to them as "kings" or "magi." In reality, all that is known of these men is that there were more than one, they came from the east, and passed through Jerusalem to pay respects to King Herod before travelling on to Bethlehem to visit the holy child. They were subsequently warned in a dream not to return to Herod, and departed "into their own country" via a different route.
