The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by the invasions which led to the fall of the western part of the empire and continued to exist for nearly 100 years. Historians have coined the term Byzantine Empire to indicate the eastern part after the fall of the western part. This part of the empire also lost territories to invaders over time. The Arabs conquered the Levant (Syria, Lebanon and Israel/Palestine) and Egypt. Slavic peoples, the Bulgars, Croats and Serbs took over much of their lands in the Balkan Peninsula. The Seljuks Turk conquered much of Anatolia (Turkey). Then the Ottoman Turks conquered the rest of Anatolia, and Greece, plus land which the Byzantine had already lost in the Balkans (Bulgaria, Albania, the Macedonian Republic, Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina). The empire was just left with Constantinople and nearby territories. Finally, the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453

When did the Western Roman Empire fall?

The most commonly used date is 476, but other dates are also used. Some historians just say 5th century, or the second half of the 5th century. Clearly it was a long, drawn out affair. The East Roman Empire survived until 1453. The name we use for it is the Byzantine Empire, but that name was never used at the time, and they were nearly always called the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.

Who split the roman empire into two parts in ad 330?

Constantine split the Roman Empire into the Holy Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. It should be noted however that the emperor Diocletian (284-305 AD ) made this easier as he was the first to divide the empire into two parts, a western and eastern empire to be ruled separately. The emperors who followed Constantine, Julian and Theodosius I, made permanent the division of the Roman Empire into an eastern and western half.

Ruler who divided the roman empire in half?

Emperor Diocletian in CE 285. However, the empire was reunified for short periods of time, like the reign of Emperors Constantine, Julian the Apostate, and Theodosius I. Also, the Eastern Empire had re-invaded the Western Empire during the reign of Justinian I and tried to recreate and rebuild the empire, but with his death the Western part of the Byzantine Empire was retaken by Barbarians.
