Sir Edmund Hillary started as a beekeeper, and was a mountaineer/tramper for his sport. He with Sherpa Tenzing Norkay were the first people to the top of Mt Everest. he subsequently was leader of the New Zealand part of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1957 -58, and was leader at Scott Base.

Subsequently he was ambassador to India.

Because of his interests in Tibet, he built many schools and hospitals in that country.

So you could say, his contributions to New Zealand were to enhance the country's reputation throught the world.
