Diaz had been the incumbent president of Mexico for more than 35 years (1876-1911). During the 1910 elections, Francisco Madero became the main opposition candidate; fearing that Madero had a chance to win such elections, Diaz imprisoned him, thus sparking what would be the first phase of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1921). After some humiliating loses against the revolutionaries, Diaz left Mexico in 1915. Madero was appointed as president of Mexico but due to lack of political savviness, he generated a lot of discontent among his supporters. With the help of American Ambassador in Mexico, he was finally assassinated by General Victoriano Huerta (1845-1916) along with his vice-president in 1913, sparking the second phase of the revolution.
