Viking" is a Nordic word meaning "pirate." Like most pirates, they used ships to raid seaside settlements to steal goods and money and to capture slaves.according to Monty Python they sit in diners and sing the spam song
The vikings were traders/raiders. They would set sail with trade goods (furs, textiles, butter, wine, honey, lumber, etc) and trade with various settlements. Should they come across a lightly defended village, they would raid it. Should they come across a Christian Monastery or Church, they would raid it for the hoard of gold kept there. And then with these spoils of war, they would continue to trade.
The Vikings are well known for their piracy on the high seas of Northern Europe and on their marauding and plundering towns and villages throughout the British Isles and Northern Europe; certainly these activities were profitable for the Viking bands who did them. However, Viking culture in Scandinavia was primarily agrarian--they farmed, raised animals, preserved foods, etc., and also did a lot of fishing. In addition, Viking handicrafts, military, materiel, and art was traded throughout Europe (from gold, silver, tin, wood, and bronze pieces). Viking shipbuilding technology was also probably traded with other peoples in a peaceful ways.
