George Washington urged future leaders to avoid many things:

- Partisan politics. He hated political parties.

- European entanglements. He hated secret treaties and endless wars.

- Excessive federal power.

- Fractiousness and divisiveness.

- Allowing any one person or family to build a legacy of power.

Unfortunately, most of these things came to be true in America. The 'two-party system' is thoroughly entrenched in our politics. We have NATO and a myriad of other foreign treaties and we get involved in wars and then wonder why. The federal government has grown to thousands of times the size Washington felt necessary. Intensely divisive and pugnacious leaders get all the news coverage and all the big money donations. Only the last item has not stayed true for any length of time. Family legacies in politics have lasted a generation, but never longer.
